Station: [0] Welcome

Hello and welcome to the town of Bürgel with its long and proud tradition of pottery-making and its Ceramics Museum, which is more than 140 years old.

For centuries, Bürgel has lived with, and made a living from, ceramics. Its blue design with white dots became famous in the second half of the last century. But that wasn’t what brought Bürgel pottery to prominence internationally. Renowned artists and their designs had already generated world-wide interest in Bürgel ceramics around 1900. Art colleges even operated workshops in the town or worked with local potters.

At the Bürgel Ceramics Museum, you’ll discover the fascinating regional history of a craft that’s thousands of years old and takes on many different forms.

Why Bürgel was predestined to develop into a flourishing pottery town; how that came about; which hurdles had to be overcome and which stages were accomplished – all those subjects are covered in our permanent exhibition on the first floor of the museum.
