Station: [14] The famous Clause 11

M: Empty wine bottles scattered across the floor. Also champagne, a barrel of strong Bock beer, a few bottles of bitter and the caraway schnapps Nordhäuser Kümmel ... The members of this student fraternity are really letting rip.

F: No wonder, because Clause 11 applies. Never heard of it? Maybe it's better that way. Because according to Clause 11 ...

M: ... let the boozing continue!

F: Or in Latin, because that instantly sounds rather more sophisticated:

M: Porro bibitur!

F: Clause 11 is probably the most famous section of what's known as the Beer Comments. The rules and customs of student fraternities were recorded in such Comments. And as the name suggests, the Beer Comment dealt with "rules in matters relating to beer".

M: The oldest recorded Beer Comment originated in the city of Tübingen with its ancient university. The oldest evidence of Clause 11 is found in the "New Jena Beer Comment" of 1853.

F: Basically, each fraternity had its own Comments, but there were also common elements – including Clause 11. The Comments should be understood as a kind of parody of existing rules of conduct.

M: And on that note: Porro bibitur!
