Station: [25] Leisure and games

“Children need toys. This holds true for the time during which Schloss Horst was being built as well. Marbles, little toy riders or bird whistles are valuable treasures for children at this time. Grown-ups, however, have much less time to play; they frequently have to keep working at home in the evenings to add to the family income, for example by working at the distaff which means spinning wool. It’s mostly the men who then seek out the tavern to pass the time playing dice or card games. Admittedly, playing for money is frowned upon, since gambling is strictly outlawed at this time.”
