Description

The light-filled museum building, opened in 2008 opposite the orangery of Rosenau Castle, was created with generous support from Coburg benefactor Otto Waldrich. From vessels and figurative objects to large floor and wall installations, it showcases the development and the technical and media diversity of modern glass art. Works awarded the Coburg Glass Prizes in 1977, 1985, 2006, 2014 and 2022 form the core of the permanent exhibition. On the upper floor there are rotating special exhibitions; a lamp-glass studio for workshops is also located there. The museum's basement houses the ceramics study collection, which, with over 500 objects by more than 250 international ceramists, offers an extensive presentation of modern ceramics. A new focus was added in an adjacent basement area with the 2026 opening of a display on the glass art of Fulvio Bianconi, who worked for Venini and other Murano manufactories.
