With around 500,000 objects from 4,000 years of human history, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MKG) is one of the most important museums of art and design in Europe. Opened in 1877, the MKG follows the grand narrative of human creativity and takes up current and cultural-historical themes in spectacular special exhibitions. Shows about tattoos, comics or animation, about plastic waste or the dark side of the textile industry, about fashion icons such as Coco Chanel and Alexander McQueen, the design of major product brands, about the relationship between animals and humans or about the role of the media in revolutions make the MKG one of Hamburg's most popular museums. The museum's top-class collections range from antiquity to the present day and encompass European, Islamic and Far Eastern cultures. The MKG brings together graphic design, poster art, photography, design, fashion, musical instruments and ceramics and provides an insight into epochs such as Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Art Nouveau and Modernism.
