Since 1961 the Pottery Museum has been housed in one of the town’s most beautiful half-timbered houses. The house was built in 1763 and served as a potter’s house until 1957. Kohren (since 1934 Kohren-Sahlis) has been known for centuries for its high-quality pottery and stove tiles. At the height of the pottery trade there were 14 potteries and a potters’ guild. The potter’s fountain on the marketplace, created by Kurt Feuerriegel in 1928, attests to the locals’ pride in their pottery tradition. In the museum you can visit an original Kohrener potter’s room (a combined living and working space). The permanent exhibition displays local pottery from the 16th to the 20th century. Special exhibitions are held regularly. A sales exhibition offers pottery by Central German potters. Children can paint porcelain by appointment or take part in the museum quiz.
