Station: [1] Welcome at the Museum Kunst der Westküste!

Welcome at the Museum Kunst der Westküste! Before you visit our current exhibitions, we would like to draw your attention to some special aspects of the museum.

In the summer of 2009, the MKdW opened its doors here in Alkersum as a non-profit donor museum. From the outset, the museum occupied a special place within the German museum landscape due to its singular collection focus on the overall theme of sea and seaside. The historical part of the collection comprises artworks created between 1830 and 1930. Central to each of those works are maritime and coastal areas in Germany, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands. In these four countries the fascination with the sea remains undiminished. Hence, another focus of the collection is on contemporary art and the critical, socially relevant issues it addresses. Particular weight is placed on artworks created on the North Sea island of Föhr. The art collection of the MKdW illustrates in a hitherto unique way that Föhr is part of a transnational and cross-cultural network extending along the entire western coastal zone.

In keeping with our island location, we aim to always have a fresh breeze blowing through the Museum Kunst der Westküste. To this end, we regularly present new selections of masterpieces. Our innovative exhibition programme often benefits from international cooperations with other museums. It is quite possible, therefore that, during your visit today, you will be able to marvel at artworks which undertook a sea voyage just for you. Since 2010, moreover, the MKdW has been inviting artists from all over the world to work as artists-in-residence on Föhr. Thus, we can proudly say that, since its inauguration, the Museum Kunst der Westküste has developed into a cultural beacon with international reach.
