Station: [6] In the Midst of Life

In the midst of life – that’s where we all are. Somewhere between work, shopping, bringing up children, looking after the household and the occasional evening with friends. Sometimes, life speeds along and passes you by. Time to take a break, even on the most stressful of days!

Take a look at this white desk, which might easily have come straight from a certain famous Swedish furniture chain. But ... one of the legs is different! It is turned in traditional style, looks down-to-earth, solid. It alludes to the spiritual foundations of our lives, which can still be sensed and seen despite the 21st century’s hectic everyday lifestyle.

And it refers to the way religion still provides crucial support in the lives of many people today ... sometimes quite subliminally. Even the way our week is arranged into six working days and one day of rest harks back to the Bible: to the creation story in Genesis.

School holidays in Germany also almost all have a Christian origin. Perhaps you’ve wondered about the significance of Corpus Christi, of Whitsun (or Pentecost) and the Day of Prayer and Repentance? And since when has Sunday been a day of rest by law in Germany?

Discover all the ways in which the Bible has left its mark on everyday life. Open the drawers, browse, turn and read. And ... have a chuckle at some really good jokes about the church and the clergy!
