Station: [25] Leisure and games

“Leisure is a contemporary concept – even so, the people working on Schloss Horst in the 16th century finished work at some point as well. Some sooner than others. Many people would be busy with house work such as spinning wool in order to earn an additional income. Others may pass the time playing cards or dice games. These pursuits are usually conducted in taverns, often enough involving money (which was frowned upon by those in authority and was thus punishable by law). More harmless fun was to be had in children’s games, as shown by these old artifacts; marbles, toy riders and bird whistles. They also remind us the simplest of toys may also be the best ones.”
