“Ordinary people’s food really isn’t particularly nice – but what to do? They have to eat what they can; mostly oat or barley mash. Whenever there is bread, it’s mainly dark rye bread, sometimes accompanied by lard, onions or cheese. As for cooking, it is mainly vegetables, pork or beef are only served on holidays – other than that meat is a prerogative of the rich. Meals are usually twice or thrice a day.
