“He made no distinction between us and them.” Things were crazy back then. We argued—me, Peter, and all the others—for days on end. We had come here to Jerusalem from Antioch. The authorities in Jerusalem had come up with the most complicated rules: all followers of Jesus were supposed to become Jews. No one gave in. And then Peter—the fisherman—finally raised his hand and said, “We’ve known this for a long time: God makes no distinction between Jews and non-Jews.” Just listen to Paul. Then they listened to me! “You are all now mature children of God—through faith—and because you are united in the closest fellowship with Jesus Christ. For baptism is the greatest thing there is: you have put on Jesus as a garment. So it doesn’t matter whether a person is Jewish or non-Jewish, a slave or free, a man or a woman. Through your connection with Jesus Christ, you have all become one.”
