Station: [8] The Tombstone of Tessia

T: “My name is Tessia Juvenilis and I am a Helvetierin, which means I come from what is now Switzerland. I lived in Sumelokenna for many years with my husband Silius Victor. I lived to be thirty-seven years old. My dear Silius had a gravestone erected for me on the road outside the city walls of Sumelokenna so that the people who knew me would remember me. That is why my gravestone was beautifully painted in color and could be seen from afar. With my personal belongings, which my family and friends gave me, I can enjoy myself in the afterlife. This allows me to find peace and quiet.”

Gravestone number 8 belongs to Tessia Juvenilis. The Latin inscription tells us her name, age, origin, and the name of her husband. With the salutation DIS MANIBUS, the deceased were entrusted to the care of guardian spirits who were to watch over them so that their souls might rest in peace.
