Station: [30] Bastei

You are now standing at the exit of the casemates on the Bastei.

From here, you have a view of the part of the castle that surrounds the actual upper castle. The bastions were renovated after 1850, based on the fortifications that had already been built in the 17th century.

From here, you’ll enjoy an unparalleled panoramic view of the surrounding area and the Albtrauf escarpment. On a clear day, you can even see far beyond. To the northeast, you can make out the Stuttgart TV Tower. To the southwest lies the Feldberg, the highest peak in the Black Forest. It’s definitely worth pausing for a moment to let your gaze wander into the distance.

As you look around the bastions, you’ll also notice the larger-than-life bronze statues. These figures originally stood in the Hall of Fame at the Berlin Armory. They depict the Brandenburg-Prussian rulers. The series begins with Frederick William, the Great Elector, and extends to Emperor Wilhelm I. Each is depicted with the dates of his reign.
