About

Our Landmarks

The municipality of Emerkingen has a cadastral area of around 7.4 square kilometers and currently has more than 800 inhabitants. It lies where the Tobelbach stream emerges from the high terraces into the Rottenacker Danube lowlands, surrounded by hilly countryside between the Bussen and the Swabian Alb.

Emerkingen was first mentioned in documents in 805. The place is named after the free noble lords of Emerkingen, of whose mighty castle only the imposing tower, the so-called “Römerturm,” survived demolition in the early 19th century. Today, a museum is housed in it.

The municipality became part of the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1806, but the patrimonial office of Emerkingen remained in existence until 1809, belonging in equal shares to the Counts of Stadion and the Lords of Stain. After the dissolution of the patrimonial office, the municipality came under the administration of the Oberamt Ehingen in 1809 and, together with it, in 1938 to the Ehingen district. This was incorporated into the Alb-Donau district in 1973.
