[1] Weißenburg Gate

Description

Designed according to the plans of the Munich architect Friedrich von Gärtner, the master builder of King Ludwig I, the Weissenburg Gate served as a city gate during the fortress period and is still one of the most beautiful and most remarkable buildings in the fortress complex today.

The gate is reached from the outside via a 30 metre long moat bridge, the last part of which was set up as a drawbridge before the gate tunnel, and its design is reminiscent of medieval castles. The date above the archway, on the other hand, indicates that it was built in 1839. Above it are two lions holding the crowned coat of arms of the Kingdom of Bavaria in their centre.

The gate tunnel leads into the town over a length of 45 metres and the building is extended to three archways. Behind the two outer arches are halls that were once used by the gate guards.
