[2] Fronte Lamotte

Description

The Fronte Lamotte, named after Lieutenant General Freiherr de La Motte, has a length of 480 metres and was one of the six defensive sections of the main ramparts of the fortifications in Germersheim, which stretched 3,200 metres around the town.
Due to its geographical location and the Rhine as a natural obstacle to approaching the town, this section of the front was less strongly developed. For example, the trench defence as the central defensive structure in the main trench is single-legged, the two weapon emplacement reductions are simple, rectangular blockhouses and there are no special flanking batteries for the front trench of the former revetment.
The trench defence, also known as a caponier, built across the main ditch in the centre of the front is the special feature of this fortress construction style, the so-called New Prussian caponier system. From this structure, an enemy who had advanced into the trench could not only be attacked head-on from the main rampart, but also from the side with rifle and cannon fire.
