The armoury was located as a strong defensive building in the middle of the 530-metre-long Reuß front, which was named after Lieutenant General Count Reuß von Plauen and was one of the six defensive sections of the main rampart of the fortifications in Germersheim, which surrounded the town for 3,200 metres.
The monumental building has a front length of 73 metres and two wings, each 20 metres long, and was used to defend this section of the front with 37 gun emplacements and numerous embrasures. In front of the building is a single-leg trench defence with 14 gun emplacements, which could also defend the trench.
Weapons and military equipment were stored and repaired in the armoury. In order to protect the valuable and important material, the construction of the building was particularly strong. The corners have walls up to 4 metres thick.
