[10] Commandant´s office

Description

The fortress commandant´s office had been housed in the former private house since 31 July 1854. The two-storey main building housed the offices and the commander´s official flat on the upper floor. A courtyard with outbuildings and a large garden adjoined the main building at the rear.
In front of the commandant´s office were small guardhouses decorated with small white and blue diamonds. The guards walked up and down in front of the door, which can still be recognised today by the wear and tear on the pavement.
Opposite on Luitpoldplatz is the war memorial to the fallen soldiers from Germersheim who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, which was donated by the warriors´ and veterans´ association of the time and sculpted by Jakob Menges from Kaiserslautern. A large ceremony accompanied its inauguration on 30 September 1888. Fully restored in 2017, it was re-erected just a few metres from its original location.
