The former military hospital building has a total length of 233 metres and was very modern for its time. Up to 550 sick and wounded could be accommodated over three floors. The basement was also habitable and was lit and ventilated by a 7 metre wide surrounding trench, the outside of which was a vertical brick wall.
As with most fortified buildings, there was a layer of sand several metres high under the roof. The roof was removed in the event of war and the sand layer protected the building from heavy cannon fire. At the edge of the roof, the water outlets can still be seen, which served to drain any rainwater to the outside so that the weight of the building would not be too great.
The main entrance led onto the former military hospital square, now the parade ground. The square stretches for around 250 metres in the form of an elongated triangle in front of the building and was equipped with a fountain and chestnut trees.
