In 1712, the Rhine boatmen’s family Elgg built their house at Fischergasse 12. As one of Bad Säckingen’s influential families, they held the monopoly on fishing, rafting and river transport on the Rhine until 1879. Life in the alley was modest; many residents farmed as well, so livestock stables were once common even in the old town.
The house still reflects these humble living conditions—small rooms, narrow stairs and simple features—yet it offers a beautiful view of the minster. A visit is worthwhile to appreciate the restoration and explore the attic.
