Eberbach Monastery
Founded in 1136, Eberbach Monastery in the Rheingau region is one of the most magnificent cultural monuments of monastic architecture with its Romanesque and early Gothic buildings, and is also considered the best-preserved medieval monastery complex in Europe. Eberbach Monastery is also world-famous as the location for the hit movie “The Name of the Rose” starring Sean Connery.
The former Cistercian abbey´s present appearance is still shaped by its centuries-old winegrowing tradition, which is preserved in close cooperation with the Eberbach Abbey Winery. Since 1998, the protection and preservation of this outstanding cultural monument have been the core tasks of the non-profit Eberbach Monastery Foundation.
Guided tours, wine tastings, festivals, and other events take place regularly.
As part of the museum´s new concept, the foundation has recently brought the once powerful Counts of Katzenelnbogen back to life with state-of-the-art 3D projection, allowing their magnificent tomb slabs in the basilica to shine in their original colors and thus telling the historical stories of the monastery and cultural history.
The secrets of the magnificent tombs of former abbots and nobles, which are numerous in the monastery´s cloister and have been extensively restored, are brought to life with the help of a QR code project in cooperation with the research unit “Die Deutschen Inschriften” (The German Inscriptions) of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz.
