Description
In 1995 the museum was opened. It is located at Kirchstr. 2/1 in Gechingen in an approximately 270-year-old farmhouse. The building was purchased by the municipality and converted into a museum. The Local History Working Group, which has cared for the museum on a voluntary basis ever since, invested more than 6,000 hours of work in order to present both the rooms and the roughly 1,000 exhibits to the public. In addition to agricultural tools and a fully furnished apartment, we present as special features a photography studio with original equipment from 1910, old fire engines, an original shoemaker’s workshop, and finds from the Celtic and Alemannic periods.
The museum is open from April to October on the first Sunday of each month from 2 to 6 p.m. with free admission. Group tours are available at any time by appointment.
From the beginning, those responsible intended to create a “living museum.” For this reason, since the inauguration in 1995 a special exhibition on a particular theme has taken place on every opening Sunday. The range of exhibitions is wide — from vintage cars, old electrical appliances, dolls, paintings, model railways, nativity scenes, and documentary displays on historical topics such as the end of the war, the history of emigrants from Gechingen, and photographs of historic buildings, to practical demonstrations such as Swabian cooking, washing as in grandma’s time, beer brewing, bell casting, blacksmithing, and children’s games from the past.
Highlights have included the parades “From per pedes to Mercedes,” “Forest Work — Past and Present,” as well as the harvest of hoe-cultivated crops and grains no longer commonly used, staged in the style of the 1950s. In 2012 the Local History Working Group celebrated its 25th anniversary. In cooperation with the Schlehengäuschule, a parade through the town took place on July 1, 2012 under the theme “Gechingen — Then and Now.”
Members of the Local History Working Group develop the ideas for each exhibition, set them up, supervise the museum on open Sundays and take care of cleaning the rooms.
Above all, the special exhibitions attract between 2,000 and 2,500 visitors each year from near and far.
