In Landkreis Osnabrück, in the town of Melle, the Automuseum Melle is located and presents automotive-historical collections in listed halls of a former furniture factory. Across three floors nearly 3,000 m² are available; two levels are used for exhibitions, and one level serves as a collections store.
The museum evolved from the Automuseum Ibbenbüren, which opened in 1984, and in 1997 relocated under its new name to its current premises on Pestelstraße in Melle. Over time approximately 2,000 different historic vehicles have been displayed on loan. The museum is operated by a non-profit limited liability company whose 24 shareholders have equal standing; the city of Melle is one of them. The operation is based entirely on volunteer work.
The presentation comprises between 250 and 350 vehicles that document the development of the automobile from its beginnings to more recent exhibits or those of contemporary historical significance. Vehicle owners are specifically invited to make their interesting automobiles available on loan. A prerequisite for inclusion is that the vehicles are in drivable condition; the loan period is limited to a maximum of six months so that the vehicles can be used again afterward.
