In Bocholt the Handwerksmuseum illustrates the working methods of 28 different crafts across 720 m². Visitors find the collections housed in several half-timbered buildings; over 4,000 tools, implements, books and drawings have been assembled there to document and convey the practical side of craftsmanship.
The exhibition presents both long-vanished trades such as the wagon smith and the linen maker, and historical portrayals of occupations that were once practiced and in part still exist today, for example the baker, the farrier and the book printer. The emphasis is on practical activity: tools, equipment and documents explain manufacturing techniques and work processes.
The museum was founded in 1993 as a private initiative to preserve memories of earlier craft worlds. After the founder’s death in August 2018 the institution remained temporarily closed; it reopened on 19 May 2019.
Taken as a whole, the collection brings the craft culture of earlier centuries to life and provides insights into skills, the use of materials and the everyday work of bygone times.
