Description
The Borusseum is located in the northeast corner of the club-owned Westfalenstadion; it presents the development of Borussia Dortmund's (BVB) football section since its founding in 1909. As the club museum, it places particular emphasis on sporting history and club identity.
The initiative for the museum arose within BVB's fan department after a member in a leadership role criticized the inadequate display of trophies in the VIP area. Because the stadium's northeast corner had not yet been developed at the time, the site proved suitable for the project and initial planning began there immediately.
As the club was simultaneously engaged in a restructuring following a threat of insolvency, the fan department declared that it would raise the necessary funds independently. The project was supported by numerous donations from companies and members as well as by the sale of a benefit CD featuring various musicians. On 19 December 2008 — the club's 99th birthday — the Borusseum was officially opened; the opening was carried out by representatives of the club leadership.
The museum therefore documents both sporting successes and the committed role of the fans in preserving the club's history.
