Description

The Coit Tower, also known as Lillian Coit Memorial Tower, is a 64-meter high tower on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco, California. It was built in 1933 and is named after Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a wealthy patroness who left the money for the construction of the tower to beautify the city she loved. The tower is designed in Art Deco style and offers a 360-degree view of the city and the bay of San Francisco. Inside the tower, there are murals painted by artists of the Public Works of Art Project during the Great Depression. These murals depict scenes of working life in California in the 1930s. The Coit Tower is a landmark of San Francisco and a popular destination for tourists. It is also known for its wild parrots living in the trees around the tower. The tower and the surrounding green spaces provide a peaceful retreat from the bustling city life.
