Description
Das Deutsche Fächermuseum is located in the Bielefelder Altstadt on the street Am Bach and is dedicated to the craft of historical and modern hand fans.
The associated foundation was established in 1994; the museum opened its doors in 1995. There is no comparable institution in Germany; worldwide it is one of only three museums with this specialization.
The exhibitions display hand fans and related accessories from around the world. The collection comprises about 3,000 fans as well as roughly the same number of accompanying objects. In addition, there is a specialist library with approximately 1,300 titles, including about 500 exhibition catalogues. The oldest exhibits date back to the 17th century. Special exhibitions are presented regularly; in 2014 an example was the show “Souvenirs im Halbrund”.
