Description
The German Blade Museum Solingen is a museum with origins in regional history and at the same time a museum with an internationally important collection. This special situation, as well as its pronounced specialization, is what makes it so attractive.
The museum presents the history of the blade, manifested in edged weapons, cutlery, knives and cutting implements. The variety of exhibits, from Bronze Age swords to contemporary cutlery, also illustrates the development and significance of cutting for the history of mankind. The museum´s cutlery collection in particular has been considerably expanded in recent years thanks to generous sponsors and state support and is now the largest collection of its kind in the world.
Like all specialized museums, the German Blade Museum displays a large number of similar objects. In order to bring them closer to the visitor, key themes have been set within the chronological sequence. They illustrate - supported by paintings, graphics and sculptures and some stagings - the different uses of bright weapons, tableware and cutlery.
On their tour, visitors experience a living museum with a visitor-friendly and informative presentation. It is a journey through the history of table culture, from simple knives to 21st century designer cutlery. But it is also a tour through the history of edged weapons from all over the world, from bronze swords from Iran to the magnificent swords of modern times.
In December 2024, the new permanent exhibition ME FECIT SOLINGEN – Blades: City: History was opened. It explains why and how Solingen became the world-famous city of blades. A captivating presentation with interactive stations invites visitors to learn about Solingen´s blade history from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
In April 2025, the new children´s exhibition Dragon and Magic Sword opened. It is designed for children of kindergarten and elementary school age. At five interactive stations, children learn everything about the history of blade manufacturing. At the end of the tour, the sleeping dragon waits for the secret of his name to be whispered in his ear.
