In the centre of Bad Doberan stands the Ehm Welk House, a modest single-family home of red clinker brick that today serves as a cultural meeting place.
In 1950 the writer Ehm Welk chose the building at Dammchaussee 23 as his residence and lived there until his death on 19 December 1966. Since December 1979 the house has been open to the public as a place for cultural encounters; in this way Welk’s wish was fulfilled to preserve the house not as a memorial but as a living space.
The property houses three exhibition areas: in the entrance hall photographs, documents and first editions and presentation copies are shown, offering insights into Ehm Welk’s biography and bibliography; a display case is dedicated to his second wife, Agathe Lindner-Welk. The study, preserved in its original state, contains, among other things, the author’s library of around 5,000 volumes. The generously laid-out garden is used for summer theatre and summer festivals; the garden house provides further information on Welk’s role as an animal lover and nature enthusiast. The former living room serves as an event space for readings, literary colloquia, concerts, theatre and cabaret evenings, musical-literary events, exhibitions and the annually held traditional Ehm-Welk events.
