On the edge of the former exhibition site in Hannover, the EXPOSEEUM preserves the visual and material heritage of the 153-day World Exposition EXPO 2000. The museum serves as a place of remembrance for the only World Exposition held in Germany to date and focuses on photographs, films and exhibition objects from that period.
The EXPOSEEUM was founded in 2001 by former Expo employees; the site remained anchored on the former trade fair grounds. On an exhibition area of around 500 m², photographs, film recordings, site models and selected gifts from the 153 participating nations are displayed. The collection comprises about 1,000 gifts and around 3,000 films that were loaned to the Expo organization. In addition to the exhibition, guided tours of the former World Exposition site are offered.
The museum’s supporting association reported having about 220 members; it receives no public funding, and has repeatedly faced financial shortfalls. Critics complained that concerns raised before and after the Expo, as well as the urban-planning consequences, were not addressed sufficiently.
At the end of 2019 the museum had to vacate its premises as a result of a building sale; the city of Hannover temporarily provided part of the former German Pavilion in Expo Park Hannover for storage. In the anniversary year 2020 the museum had no exhibition space. Shortly before the 25th anniversary of the EXPO, the EXPOSEEUM was reopened in 2025 in new premises at the EXPO-Plaza.
