In the context of the historic settlement, the Fuggereimuseum conveys the history and significance of the Augsburger Fuggerei and situates its development for visitors.
Since its founding in 1957, the Fuggereimuseum has been located at Mittlere Gasse 13 and 14; parts of the presentation are housed in the last surviving original residential house of the Fuggerei.
The exhibition areas have been expanded successively: an educational section was significantly enlarged and modernized in 2006. In 2008 the complementary museum "Weltkriegsbunker in der Fuggerei" was established, which makes use of a preserved air-raid shelter dating from 1943.
The permanent exhibition is divided into historical and contemporary sections. In three rooms preserved in their original spatial layout and furnished in the style of the 18th century, earlier domestic life can be traced; additionally, a historic museum apartment illustrates everyday life in the Fuggerei in the early 19th century. A separate show apartment demonstrates contemporary living. In the modernized interpretive area, films, text and image panels, and objects explain the history of the Fuggerei and the Fugger family. In the outdoor area, information panels point out historical and architectural details of individual buildings. In the air-raid shelter, the building’s conception and use, the Augsburger Bombennacht of 25 to 26 February 1944, the post-war reconstruction years, and the expansion of the Fuggerei up to 1973 are documented.
