Description

In the Kunstareal München, the Geologische Museum in München, as the publicly accessible part of the Bavarian State Collection for Paleontology and Geology, conveys central insights into Earth’s history. The presentation is aimed at a broad audience and combines the collection holdings with scientific contextualization.

The museum is housed in the building of the Institute for General and Applied Geology of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Luisenstraße 37, in the heart of the Kunstareal München. From the outside the building does not bear any special indication of the exhibition.

The Bavarian State Collection for Paleontology and Geology is one of the five research institutions of the State Natural Science Collections of Bavaria and thus provides the institutional framework for collection, research and public outreach.

On an exhibition area of 450 m², processes of Earth’s formation are explained. Particular focuses of the exhibition are the formation of the Alps and the origin of fossil fuels; geological relationships are made comprehensible through exhibits and explanatory material.
