In the Aschen district of the town of Diepholz in the district of Diepholz, the Heimatmuseum Aschen offers insights into the historical rural everyday life of the region.
The museum is sponsored and operated by the Heimatverein Aschen.
The open-air museum extends over an approximately 8,000 m² site. Numerous original preserved and reconstructed buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries can be seen there: a storehouse from 1741, a stone bread oven, a bee house, a draw-well and a Göpelhaus. In addition there is a village smithy from the 18th century, a carpentry workshop dating from 1893, a sheep barn from 1791, as well as a barn, a carriage shed and a machinery shed. A Heuerlingshaus and the village school are also part of the ensemble; additional exhibition rooms are located in an outbuilding of the old school.
In and around the buildings, large agricultural machinery, farm implements, furniture, tools, household items and complete workshops are exhibited, conveying rural life and work.
Since 1997 the museum has used the site once a year for a classic vehicle gathering.
In 2020 a new half-timbered hall with a floor area of 13 × 16 m was erected on the site. On two floors, exhibits relating to life and agriculture in past times are to be presented in a museum-appropriate and informative way. Seventy-three percent of the construction costs were financed through the village development program for the Diepholz localities Aschen, Heede and Sankt Hülfe; the new hall also received support from a foundation.
