Description
The Krankenhausmuseum Bielefeld is located in Klinikum Bielefeld Mitte (new name: Universitätsklinikum OWL) in the Dr.-Mildred-Scheel-Park in Bielefeld. It documents the local development of hospital care and, in particular, presents the history of the Klinikum Bielefeld Mitte through texts, images and historical props. The museum is operated by the non-profit association Krankenhausmuseum Bielefeld e. V.
The museum's offerings are aimed at visitors of all ages. As a cooperation partner of the AG Geschichte und Wissenschaftstheorie der Medizin, the museum supports the development of a teaching and research collection on the history of medicine at Universität Bielefeld. To this end, objects from the museum's holdings are made available for courses, and research projects and on-site excursions are facilitated.
At the center of the exhibition are an iron lung and a representation of a patient in a hospital bed. These focal points are complemented by personal items, furnishings, and treatment and nursing aids. Exhibits relating to diagnostics and therapy include instruments for cardiovascular examinations, injections, blood sampling and microbiological testing.
The collection began in 1987; as of early 2025 it comprises around 4,500 objects. Large equipment is housed in an external storage facility.
