Description

In Munich, the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung (also: Kunsthalle München) plays a central role in the city's exhibition programme; three to four temporary exhibitions are presented here each year. With about 350,000 visitors, the Kunsthalle is one of the most frequently visited exhibition venues in Germany.

The building is located in the Old Town on the pedestrianised Theatinerstraße (Theatinerstraße 8) and is part of the Fünf Höfe complex. The Kunsthalle opened in 1985; by spring 2018 a total of 108 exhibitions had been shown. In 2001 the institution moved into newly designed rooms within the Fünf Höfe, planned and executed by Swiss architects.

The Kunsthalle does not have its own collection; its programme consists exclusively of temporary exhibitions. The thematic range extends from prehistory and early history to the immediate present and also encompasses the margins of art, non-European and interdisciplinary issues. Examples of exhibitions shown include "Maharaja: Pracht der indischen Fürstenhöfe" (2010) and "Orientalismus in Europa: Von Delacroix bis Kandinsky" (2011). Emphases are placed on exhibitions of Old Masters and Classical Modernism as well as on contemporary positions; represented were, for example, Chagall, Gauguin, Alberto Giacometti, Kirchner, Magritte, Monet, Munch, Nolde, Picasso and Mark Rothko. In 2015 the Kunsthalle devoted an exhibition to fashion design for the first time with Jean Paul Gaultier ("From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk").

Among the most visited single presentations of recent years are "Claude Monet und die Moderne" (237,000 visitors), "Folkwang: Erstes Museum der Moderne" (236,000), Jean Paul Gaultier (213,000), "Pompeji: Leben auf dem Vulkan" (190,000) and Mark Rothko (139,000).

The Kunsthalle's educational work includes guided tours, lectures, concerts and other events, as well as specific programmes for children and families; for this it cooperates with regional and supraregional cultural partners. Spatially, the Kunsthalle extends over two buildings with an exhibition area of 1,185 m² and a total area of around 3,200 m²; the visitor experience is shaped by the routing through the passage system of the Fünf Höfe, for example via the Perusahof and the Salvatorpassage.
