Description

Entrepreneur Siegfried Weishaupt and his wife Jutta have built a high-caliber collection of modern and contemporary art over 50 years, which has been open to the public since November 2007 in the private museum newly erected by Munich architect Wolfram Wöhr. On 1,280 m², European and American classics from the second half of the 20th century to the present are presented in regularly changing configurations. Seminal works of Abstract Expressionism — including Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning — are part of the Weishaupt collection, as are extensive bodies of work by American Pop artists such as Warhol, Lichtenstein, and Wesselmann. Josef Albers and Max Bill, as representatives of Concrete Art, together with positions from Zero and Op Art, round off this period on the European side. Although the collection’s focus is on painting, certain aspects are complemented by selected sculptural works and room installations — artists such as Nam June Paik, Keith Haring, Tony Cragg, Richard Long, and Wolfgang Laib are exemplary. Current tendencies in the collection are reflected by Robert Longo, Jason Martin, Liam Gillick, and Wolfgang Laib.
