Description
In Bielefeld the MuMa-Forum (Murnau & Massolle Forum) occupies a special position as a place for engagement with cinema and the technical art of filmmaking. The film museum is located in the East Westphalian city of Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia and focuses its programme on the interrelationship between artistic expression and technical practice in film.
The institution was opened on 16 January 2022. Its sponsor and initiator is the Stiftung Tri-Ergon Filmwerk. The founding was financially supported by the NRW-Stiftung and the Kulturstiftung der Westfälischen Provinzial Versicherung; the Ministry for Homeland, Municipal Affairs and Equality of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia additionally contributed €260,000. In 2021 the MuMa-Forum was awarded the Heimatpreis of the city of Bielefeld in the culture category. In January 2023 a cooperation began with the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau-Gesamtschule in Bielefeld. In June 2025 the sponsor had to file for insolvency due to rent arrears; since then the museum has been closed.
Thematically the MuMa-Forum is dedicated to the film pioneers Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau and Joseph Massolle, who were born in Bielefeld. It presents and explains film art and film technology and their inseparable significance for one another.
