Description

Located in the centre of Bad Bederkesa, the Museum Burg Bederkesa plays a central role in presenting the archaeology and cultural history of the Landkreis Cuxhaven. It is housed in Burg Bederkesa; museum operations began in 1982 after the restoration of the castle building.

The collections bring together finds from more than 10,000 sites in the Landkreis Cuxhaven and span chronologically from the 4th millennium BC to the modern era. The museum is managed by the Archäologische Denkmalpflege des Landkreises Cuxhaven; it is supported by the Burggesellschaft Bederkesa e. V. and other regional institutions.

Particularly striking are the exceptionally well-preserved wooden finds from the Wurtensiedlung Feddersen-Wierde, dated to the 1st to 5th centuries. These holdings are complemented by material from the settlement area Flögeln, whose occupation extends back to the Neolithic, as well as by finds from the Old Saxon burial grounds at the Fallward dating to the 4th and 5th centuries. As a standout exhibit the museum displays the Thron aus der Marsch, an almost completely preserved Klotzstuhl. Other significant pieces include early medieval wooden furniture, wooden vessels and a ship burial.
