Description

As a project of the state initiative StadtBauKultur NRW, the Museum for Architecture and Engineering (M:AI) presents building culture in North Rhine-Westphalia in various formats. It functions as a mobile forum that brings architecture and engineering together for discussion through exhibitions, publications, temporary actions and artistic interventions.

The M:AI does not have a permanent exhibition venue; its presentations take place across the state and are frequently shown in buildings that are thematically linked to each project. In this way, local sites are directly incorporated into the thematic exploration.

The museum was founded in 2005 with the aim of making architectural and engineering achievements visible and reflecting on them. In addition to thematic exhibitions, the M:AI organises lectures and publishes writings on issues relevant to building culture. Current debates from North Rhine-Westphalia are placed in national and international contexts.

The presentations cover architecture and engineering as well as planning, urban development, urbanism and landscape architecture. For its work, the M:AI cooperates with professional chambers, business and housing associations, as well as universities and companies across the construction value chain. The museum is also part of an international network of architecture museums, centres and institutes, and it is advised on content by specialists in architecture and engineering.
