Museum Haus Ludwig für Kunstausstellungen Saarlouis

In Saarlouis the Galerie Ludwig Saarlouis (until 2017 Museum Haus Ludwig) occupies a visible position in the city’s cultural offerings and is dedicated to the presentation of visual arts.

Originally the house opened on 30 May 1989 in a representative former bank building. The exhibition space extends over approximately 400 m² on the ground and first floors; the second floor houses a studio that serves as a meeting place for local artist groups and is used for exhibitions by regional artists.

At its opening the focus was on art from the former GDR, in connection with the first German-German town twinning between Saarlouis and Eisenhüttenstadt. In 1990 the name was changed to Museum Haus Ludwig für Kunstausstellungen Saarlouis; since then the institution has presented rotating exhibitions featuring regional, national and international positions. In 2017 the old site was closed and the Ludwig Galerie was re-established in the former Kaserne VI opposite.

The exhibition programme concentrates on three areas: presentations of significant works from the collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig, exhibitions of regional artists, and collaborations with national and international museums and private collectors. In addition, the gallery places emphasis on museum education programmes primarily aimed at children; works created by children in connection with the exhibitions are shown in the museum spaces.
