Description
The Historical Museum in the Steinhaus Bad Wimpfen
The Stone House of the Swabian Royal Palatinate is home to the Historical Museum of the City of Bad Wimpfen. The striking stepped gable building from the 12th century and seven-part window probably originally served as the queen's chamber.
The museum includes testimonies of Wimpfen's history up to the Middle Ages, with two main focuses:
- Roman Wimpfen: Wimpfen was one of the largest Roman cities in the so-called Dekumatland and even had a bridge over the Neckar. The importance of this town is documented by the rich archaeological finds, especially the "Wimpfen heaven of the gods".
- The Hohenstaufen Wimpfen: Around 1180, the largest Swabian palace north of the Alps was built here. At the centre of the exhibition is a model of the Palatinate, around which special exhibitions on the history of the High Middle Ages are grouped, such as falcon hunting, minnesang, collections on Swabian history.
- The survival of the Hohenstaufen in our time.
