Description
With its two buildings, the Museumsberg Flensburg is one of the largest museums in Schleswig-Holstein. Since its foundation in 1876, the museum has been dedicated to the art and cultural history of the former Duchy of Schleswig, the northern half of which has belonged to Denmark since 1920. The permanent exhibition at the Heinrich Sauermann House shows art and cultural history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. This includes a children's area with numerous hands-on elements, the section “Flensburg – a city and its people,” and the treasure chamber with gold, silver, and faience from the collection. The original farmhouse parlors and the historical furniture collection, with over 900 pieces, are unique and among the most extensive of their kind in Germany. The neighboring Hans Christiansen House displays Schleswig-Holstein art from the 19th to the 21st century. The focus is on the Art Nouveau section with major works by the artist Hans Christiansen, Expressionist art, including works by Erich Heckel, Ernst Barlach, and Emil Nolde, as well as contemporary art from the north. Special exhibitions with changing themes complement the permanent collection.
