Description

In a historic tram depot in the decommissioned E-Werk Weimar, the room installation "Concert for Buchenwald" by the artist Rebecca Horn has been on display since 1999. This internationally acclaimed work is regarded as one of the most significant examples of the Holocaust theme in contemporary art in Germany. On a short stretch of track, old, used musical instruments and their accompanying leather cases are piled up. It is a silent concert for Buchenwald: symbolically, the violins, mandolins, and guitars represent each individual fate in this installation. The music and singing, the people, however, are missing. The installation was specifically created for the approximately 150 square meter, windowless room of the former tram depot. Thus, the work is inseparably connected to the city of Weimar through its association with Buchenwald and the location.
