Description
In Pinneberg, the Samlandmuseum presents the culture, history and way of life of Samland and East Prussia. The museum is housed in the Bürgerhaus, Fahltskamp 30.
The collection includes rescued exhibits from the former museum in Burg Lochstädt. The exhibitions provide insight into regional trade, crafts and fishing. Other subjects include the former seaside resorts, amber mining and the Vogelwarte Rossitten.
Historically, Samland emerged from the administrative units Kreis Fischhausen and Landkreis Königsberg (Pr). Both districts had existed as independent entities since 1 February 1818; on 1 April 1939 they were merged into the Landkreis Samland.
The care and maintenance of the museum are largely the responsibility of the Kreisgemeinschaft Fischhausen. After a fire in 2009, the building was redesigned and reopened in September 2011.
