schauraum: comic + cartoon

Description

In Dortmund’s cultural offerings, the schauraum: comic + cartoon has occupied a special role as a venue for graphic storytelling since its founding in 2019. The institution is part of the Dortmunder Kulturbetriebe and works in cooperation with uzwei at the Dortmunder U as well as with the Stadt- und Landesbibliothek Dortmund.

The schauraum presents originals from the fields of comics and cartoons in rotating special exhibitions, placing the interplay of image and text and the medium’s narrative possibilities at the centre. Complementing its analogue programme, the institution operates a digital exhibition format for which it develops its own concepts and contributions.

Since 2024, the schauraum has served as a member of the jury for the Dortmunder Comic-Preis Dodo, which the city of Dortmund has endowed with €10,000. Entries for the prize are available in the schauraum’s digital offering. The first recipient of the Dodo in 2025 is Hannah Brinkmann with the work Gegen mein Gewissen.
