Description

At the Schlossmuseum Ismaning, housed in the Gärtnerhaus of the Schlosspark, exhibits present evidence of local cultural history and of the development of the castle complex. The exhibition focuses on objects, documents and photographs, with a particular emphasis on the Familie Beauharnais-Leuchtenberg and on the development of the community of Ismaning in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The museum opened on 26 July 1986 in the entrance area of the Kutscherbau and was able to expand already in the following year. After more than two decades with a largely unchanged presentation, the collection moved out of the Kutscherbau in January 2008; parts were shown temporarily in the Torfbahnhof. On 14 July 2010 the museum reopened in the Gärtnerhaus with a revised concept and a significantly expanded permanent exhibition.

The exhibits document the history of the place, first recorded in a document in 809, and the use of the castle as the baroque summer residence of the Fürstbischöfe des Hochstifts Freising. A focal point is the 19th century, when the complex acquired its Neoclassical form under Prinzessin Auguste von Bayern (ab 1816 Herzogin von Leuchtenberg). Models of the old Ismaninger railway station and of the paper mill, which has largely been preserved, illustrate the town’s more recent history; complementary information covers infrastructure, agriculture and local industry.

Among the special items are a Baroque altar retable from the second half of the 18th century from the Johanniskirche, which was demolished in 1904; the portrait and miniature collection of the Familie Beauharnais-Leuchtenberg; the model of the old railway station with Torfbahn; and a working model of a Selbstabnahmemaschine from the Ismaninger Papierfabrik. The permanent exhibition is supplemented by temporary special exhibitions.

The Schlossmuseum also looks after the historic ceremonial rooms in Schloss Ismaning (not freely accessible) and the exhibition in the old sawmill of the Kultur- und Bildungszentrum Seidl-Mühle; guided tours at both sites are available on request.
