Description
Situated in the middle of Trier’s Hauptmarkt, the Spielzeugmuseum Trier preserves and makes historic toys accessible.
The origins of the collection go back to the museum’s opening in May 1989 on Nagelstraße, when private collectors founded it. The collection remained in private ownership until it was sold in 2000; since then the museum has been run by an association established specifically to preserve it. In October 2003 the exhibition moved into the “Steipe”, a historic building on the Hauptmarkt.
The displayed objects come from an extensive collection. Across approximately 500 square metres of exhibition space on two floors, more than 5,000 exhibits are presented. On display are, among other things, tinplate toys, model railways, dollhouses, toy shops, teddy bears, steam engines and rocking horses. The oldest object in the exhibition is a dancing bear more than 130 years old by the French toy maker Fernand Martin.
The main entrance is at Dietrichstraße 51; an accessible entrance for visitors with limited mobility is provided via Jakobstraße.
