Städtische Galerie Kubus

Description

The Städtische Galerie KUBUS (also: Kubus.Städtische Galerie) is located at Theodor-Lessing-Platz in Hannover and positions itself as a venue for contemporary art in an urban context.

The freestanding, two-storey building was erected in the 1960s as an extension to the adult education centre and was completed in 1965. Also in 1965, the sculpture "Stahlrelief" by Erich Hauser was installed on the northeast side and characterises the exterior appearance.

On the upper floor the gallery primarily presents rotating exhibitions by artists and photographers from Hannover. The ground floor and basement have provided space since the outset for various contemporary art galleries; among those active there were Galerie Brusberg, Galerie Wewerka (1986–1989) and Galerie Sandmann + Haak. Since 2001 the Galerie vom Zufall und vom Glück has used the rooms, mainly for exhibitions by artists from Lower Saxony; this use is supported by the Niedersächsische Lottostiftung, since 2009 the Niedersächsische Lotto-Sport-Stiftung.

The exhibition programme comprises eight current presentations each year. A municipal committee selects them on the basis of submitted exhibition concepts. A programmatic emphasis is on collaboration with Hannover’s partner cities: artists from Poznań, Hiroshima, Perpignan, Rouen and Bristol are invited to develop joint exhibitions with Hannover-based positions, thereby providing insights into contemporary currents in the respective countries.

Publications and catalogues regularly accompany the exhibitions. They document a broad spectrum of international projects and regional topics, from Chinese folk painting through retrospectives and homages to projects on art by people with psychiatric experience.
