The Stadtmuseum Erlangen is located in the heart of the historic old town in the former Altstädter Rathaus and a neighboring bourgeois house. The beautiful, large courtyard of the baroque building block is ideal for action and family days and other open-air cultural events.
The permanent exhibition documents the city´s history from prehistoric times in the Erlangen area through to the 20th century. The main focus is on the baroque city with Huguenot crafts and manufactories, with a residence and university. Other topics include the upheavals of the industrial age and the transformation of urban society since the German Empire in the context of German history. The tour ends with the development into the Siemens city and large city after 1945.
A strength of the museum is its sophisticated special exhibitions on topics of urban, cultural, and contemporary history, as well as medical and history of science and art. Collaborations with the university are becoming increasingly important. The dialogue between history and the present determines the exhibition program and the offerings of museum education.
