The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is one of the most important art museums in the world and houses the world´s largest collection of works by the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890). The museum was opened on June 2, 1973 and is located in a characteristic modern building designed by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld. The museum´s collection includes more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 750 letters by Vincent van Gogh. Among the best-known works are Sunflowers, The Starry Night, The Bedroom, Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, and several of his famous self-portraits. The museum also owns works by other artists from the Post-Impressionist era that shed light on the context and development of Van Gogh´s art. The exhibition is arranged chronologically and shows the development of Van Gogh´s painting style from his early works in the Netherlands to his famous paintings from the time in Arles, Saint-Rémy, and Paris. In addition to the paintings and drawings, letters, photographs, and personal belongings of the artist are also on display. Approximately 2.2 million people visit the museum each year, making it one of the most visited art museums in Europe. In 2015, it was named the best museum in the Netherlands by the Stichting Museumkwaliteit. The Van Gogh Museum is not only an important place for the research and presentation of Vincent van Gogh´s artistic work, but also a significant cultural center in Amsterdam.
